Announcing the
Highway 99 Hardpan Blues Awards!
"Best Band" and "Best Bar"
Welcome.
We're hoping to provide some of the best info about area tunes,
music and gigs -- just keeping the blues thriving. And thrive, it does.
It's said, Fresno was once a West Coast Blues hotbed.
Not quite true. The Highway 99 corridor probably still has
more world-class blues musicians per-capita than anyplace outside of the
Big Muddy. Highway 99 has a special lingering smell that we can't
get rid of, in our air, it's in our sweat, on our breath, and our music.
It's Fellini eating Grapes of Wrath, it's hardpan farmers,
it's the smell of meth labs, corporate agriculture, the $20 whores who give
mainstreet Blackstone Avenue some class, it's crop dusters and the human and
other exhaust of San Fransisco and Los Angles contibuting to our sometime
tearful eye, it's orange
and lemon blossems, God's air. For those who are not ashamed
of Highway 99, who do not pretend, there's our music.
. So let's keep doing it.... Why?
Because we luvs Da Blues, that's all.
Evo Bluestein interviews Chris Millar:
Millar: I guess. I think the world needs to hear
these people. It's really as much for the artist as it
is for the audience. People in Fresno need to hear
their local talent and understand what's going on
with them and their relationship to these local
artists. Believe it or not these local artists are our
message of culture to the rest of the world. When
Europeans and the rest of the world think of
Fresno, they don't think of the Fresno
Philharmonic or the Fresno State Bulldogs.
EB: And these guys are virtually unknown here?
Millar:
Yeah. I think that's kind of the way it is in
art. A lot of times you're a stranger in your own
hometown.

Hardpan: A dirt-brown, concrete-like calcium carbonate
bound aggrigate stone layer seveal feet thick, most often lieing zero to three
feet below the soil's surface, common in semi-arid regions.
July '00. Once again, the Fresno blues scene seems
to be moving faster than I can keep up. I never
thought I'd see weekends where blues acts outnumbered rock
and country combined, but it's happened! Our
blues Gigsboard died on Y2K, no new entries.
I don't know how to fix it (yet), sorry.
...the Fresno Bee publishes a weekly entertainment calender
every Friday and Sunday.
March '99. Before I pretend to review any
bands, you you should know my bias. First I think "reviewing
a band" is futile. I really love the blues harp,
and sometimes I can play a little when I've drank enough. That's
my musical training, so I go by feelings.
You can tell my favorite blues styles by looking and
listening around. If the band plays Mustang Sally, I go out
for a smoke, and if it's too loud or the venue is crappy, I'll leave.
I try not to let my negative biases show here, and I do keep an eye on
the audience. Overall, I love the Highway 99 Blues sound, and
I think we could better utilize all our singing talent.
Fresno area Artists:
Singing guitar-man Hosea Leavy
cooks..
He semi-retired in June '98 from public
performances, but can still be heard at various blues jams.
He was best known locally as the ambassador of Blues at Zapp's Park's blues
jam. Is he the "Granddaddy of the Blues"? Hard
to say. With all that going on, it's easy to overlook his guitar
playing. Don't. I think of Muddy Waters and traditional
classic blues. His solid three-piece band one night
evolved intermittently under Hosea's direction as different guests joined
the jam, -- it was really like a dozen different unpredictable bands, and
some of those jam gems were great. Putting together a sound
is what he does best. Booking info: 559-237-6832.
The MOFO Party Band lives
up to its name.. MOFO is currently the holder of our
Highway 99 Hardpan Blues Award: Best Band.
This tight, high energy blues band
puts smiles on everybody's face, and lots of people get dancing.
They are one of Central California's most popular bands for good reason
MOFO does Chicago, with some traditional Delta styles,
with roots showing in the Highway 99 Sound, and West Coast Jump Blues.
I luvs John's powerhouse harp. Their latest CD; Call the Doctor
is great!
Ron Thompson & the Resistors is one hell of a hot band! It's hard to believe this is only a trio. Besides keyboard, and occasional harp, Ron also sings, plays electric and duct-tape guitar in finger, standard, and delta bottleneck styles, plus one hot mandolin. A world-class blues musician, Ron really can do it all. They play mostly blues jams at RT's across the river. They play a wide and sometimes eclectic mix of blues influences that sounds like nobody else.
Blues West sometimes
with Harmonica Slim is da blues distilled.
Classic Down-home blues, the pure stuff, - clean and hot it kicks ass.
Need I say more?
Blues West Band leader/drummer, record and
festival producer; Chris Millar is
da man with the plan. A long time icon; Mr. Keep da
Blues Alive of Fresno. He prefers his blues; straight
up.
Singer-harpist Richard Riggins was first called Little Harmonica Slim back
in 1955 by his brother-in-law; Muddy Waters. His occasional
addition to the Blues West trio fill it out nicely. That's
how they do things, expect something like that. Lately Blues West
has mostly been been doing gigs out of town and in Europe, so catch them
when you can. Chris is also doing a duo which I hear is
a real crowd pleaser called Pet & Poke
with guitarist Paris Slim.
Steamin' Stan Ruffo and
Martin Pugh
were
based in Visalia/Three Rivers, but Ruffo has moved to the mountains near
San Bernardino, CA. But he still does some area gigs from time to
time.
Stan Ruffo plays a plethora of instruments including; guitar, sax, and
harmonica, -- my favorite were his pure-blues ten-hole
harp leads. HOT!
Singer/entertainer Dr. Feel Good & Boogie Bill, Mr. Earth's Blues Band makes you feel good. This group one night at Zapp's consisted of singer, synth/keyboard, sax, and drums. Without a driving harp or guitar, it was upbeat West Coast Blues with a soft sound and a Delta feel. Warren "Dr. Feel Good" Milton has a lot of charisma, involves the audience, bringing smiles.
Singing guitar-man Glen Delpit knows that Delta dirt. Delpit often plays solo, an array of acoustical guitars, doing by far, the best selection of old-time country blues (and a few old ballads and folk tunes) that I've heard, -- including Delta Blues artists such as Barbecue Bob and Robert Johnson. Unique, a must-see for Delta blues and the roots of American music. This guy is a Highway 99 treasure, originally from the Big Muddy Delta Area, perhaps our most under-appreciated bluesman.
Singing guitar-man Gary Mendoza hails from the San Luis Obispo coastlands, but promises to become a strong part of the Highway 99 blues scene with his down-home acoustic and his electric blues bands. We were taken by his charisma and has one of the best blues voices around.
Blues Train is a seven-piece
band with a family feel.
They
have three guitars and a keyboard, five singers and harp. Playing
some great blues and some R&B, one memorable down-home blues improv,
Vanilla Man,
went 15 or 20 minutes. Both at Zapp's and Time-Out, several
well known local musicians joined in for some serious jamming.
This band is really what da blues is all about.
Brickyard Jones is a four-piece band with a real bluesy, often upbeat swing sound from Visalia and central coast towns. If you love da blues, you'll not soon forget what this band, particularly the singer/harpist delivers.
Guitar Mac See Sacramento bands and Blues Radio below.
The Blue Divas includes
several members of Blues Train. I saw them right after they
got back together in Feb '99 at the Starline (nice venue!). I'd like
to see them again. Do you know that feeling you get when you
first pick up a firecracker that went out?...
Guitar wailer Bimbo Walker,
another icon from the nearby hills, is back on the road again with good blues
mixed occasionally with the best Latin flavored blues in town, often with a
Santana flavor.
Corby Yates and SRV
are the only two guitar players I've heard that can improve a Jimmy Hendrix
tune. BLASPHEMY!! At the Sonora Blues Fest in Aug
'99 he played a lot of Jimmy in his sets. Ya, besides technique,
he has feeling too.
I caught the
White Collar Blues Band
at a really crappy venue. But they played good solid
blues-rock, much of which many people would not recognize as blues.
3 Guy's Play'n the Blues
exploded the Highway 99 scene last year, and are the hottest and busiest
new band in town.
With the addition of a harmonica player, they're really four guys.
They play good solid blues, but probably do the best jazz-blues
fusion in town, I'd like to hear more of that.
Various unattached artists.
Coleman Head and the Groove Kings
might not be a blues band, but when they play the blues, they kick ass.
With Jay Van Horn on harmonica,
they could be a real Contender. I wonder if they went a whole
set and a half without playing any real blues because it was a country bar?
How cool! Our formally unattached artists are now
with blues bands! Singer-saxist Margo Montoya is
now with Blues Express who I have not heard yet,
and singer-harpist Roger Gonzales is with
Three Guys...
I only have one new outstanding talent to add to the
list, it's Pheadra
who I heard jamming with the early days of 3 Guys.
She does this delicate weaving flirtatious(?) thing with her voice that
makes old standards sound fresh, yet I think she is capable of belting
them out when needed. I think of Billie Holiday.
Nice presence. Voicemail at (559) 215-1219.
If you are looking for new talent, the hottest blues jam around is
RT's, on Wednesdays.

Sacramento is becoming a blues powerhouse that rivals the Fresno area.
The Chrome Addicts are
cooking something fresh, but it's all retro.
Imagine
the Stray Cats blow'n da blues. A mixture of West Coast, Swing,
classic blues, rockabilly, and jump, -- ok? -- but it works.
This is an exciting and dynamic sound. Is this the future of
the blues? This foursome can do two lead guitars, four singers,
lead harp & drums. Often on tour, keep an eye open for them in Fresno.
Mick Martin and the Blues Rockers
do it to it.
Imagine Meatloaf blowing harp. Mostly
rock'n blues, Mick Martin's harp tribute to James Cotton, Junior Wells,
Charlie Musselwhite, etc alone is worth the price of admission.
Keep an eye open for them in Fresno, or if you're in Sacramento one Saturday
try KXJZ 88.9 FM 1-5 PM.
Lena Mosley and the BaddBlues
Band was going thru some changes.
I couldn't believe I saw that. In the morning
venue, Lena could not sing a note, the band was just fair, but with a little
voodoo mojo from her grandmother, she was able to knock out a few songs
that night and the the BaddBlues Band exploded. I'm not really
sure what happened, but I'd sure like to see it again. My notes just say:
"++DaBlues!". What was that? Anyway, I do remember
it was an all Black blues band (what a novel idea!) and everybody including
me was whispering; "young Micheal Jackson"?
Guitar Mac and His Blues Express
sometimes tours
thru Fresno on the Highway
99 thang. Good stuff, it's about feeling, like BB King, so
I luvs it. Lady Mac describes it as "...Delta blues, Roadhouse
blues, I guess there is no true name to really put it into a permanent category.
They pretty much have their own style and it's loved all over the world."
Sounds true. His CD, Boiling Point, still almost spends
more time on my stereo
than any other, and I have no idea why. A powerful beat, it gently
picks up my soul and carries it aloft,...and keeps it there.
Also see Blues Radio below.
Weekly scheduled Blues events around Fresno
This bar is not much to look at, if you can even find it.
RT's for the best blues jams around,
every Wednesday. It's the Winner of the Perhaps the oldest current Blues venue in Fresno is
Zapp's Park.
As of spring '99, blues have been de-emphasized
there since the change of management, so check the paper,
even though blues is not regularly scheduled, they are
still one of the top blues venues. This cozy musician's bar
often doesn't really start cooking until around midnight, and
typically charges a $2.00 or $3.00 cover.
Club Fred, features
Glen Delpit blues, FREE!, 5:30-7 PM, every Friday. At this
time of day, the happy hour crowd doesn't even fill Club Fred, so
this may be the best venue if you like sitting up close, or blues with
your pool game.
The
Patio Cafe
in the Fig Garden Village does regular and semi-regular blues things,
often on Thursday. A good coffee house with food and wine,
some tunes on the crowded patio, you get the idea.
It's mellow, I like it. 3 Guys have played there alot.
Highway 99 Hardpan Blues Award: Best Bar.
A friendly musician's bar about sums it up, home of
Ron Thompson's blues jam.
There's a pool table, dark beer, good whiskey, free popcorn,
relaxed people and some great blues.
It's about ten minutes from Fresno, take HW 41
across the San Joaquin River, out in the
orange groves. 37275 Avenue 12, Madera Ranchos, way in the back
behind the sports bar near the tractor wash. 645-6141

Here, you can sometimes reach out and touch the drums
while sitting at the bar. Two constants here keep me coming
back: "real friendly" and "good music".
Many other nights you can hear quality funk, urban, soft urban, and
Motown, -- every night is about live music. (No, this
isn't a "black bar," and yes, most of the kiddie bands should be sent
back to their garage and kiddie-parties from where they escaped.)
A recent
addition is a full Chinese dinner menu for the early birds.
266-0334, 1105 N Blackstone, just south of Olive almost
in the Tower District.
This is the big club out-of-town musicians know about.
When an out-of town band plays there, get to Fred's about two hours early,
because they have a habit of selling more than they can seat.
1426 N Van Ness, Fresno, north of Olive Ave.
Their phone machine sucks, big time.
North end of The Village, N Palm, and W Shaw
243-1074
Magoon's Saloon is described as a "sleazy little mountain saloon" that's too much fun, in Pollock Pines. 40 minutes out of Sact on Hwy 50. "We LOVE Blues and support it best we can. Sundays Magoon's Saloon does "Blues, Bikes & BBQ". During the winter we do Blues on Saturday and Sundays." Sounds fun. Their link died, are they still there?

These are just some hints, many from last year, so keep your eyes open. I'm not going to update this section this year, but it still gives the flavor of and approximate dates of some smaller sit-up-close annual blues festivals. (For the specifics, try the blues festival-finder links here or elsewhere.) (In calendar order:) Sacramento (has
no Fresno Factor) (They also have a Blues Society.)
Russian River Blues Festival '98 in Guerneville. The weekend near June 6th & 7th...for some name-brand blues bands. Juneteenth Celebration in Allensworth, '99 June 19, 10:00. Most of us first heard of this as a "blues fest", but it's a Black celebration of the end of slavery. Plenty of food and crazy blues, gospel, and jazz music. Much of it sounds like nothing I've heard before, a good family oriented party, plus historical tours of the town site. Everyone is welcome. From Fresno, take Highway 99 south to Earlimart, then go 7 miles west to Allensworth State Historical Park. 4th
SONORA BLUES FESTIVAL, 99 August 14, 1999 Saturday

host of "Evening Blues", KCBX FM in San Luis Obispo, Calif:
SF, Long Beach, and Monterrey are the 3 premier large festivals in California. We still have SF, and Long Beach left to go this summer. As for the San Francisco Blues fest., Tom Mazzolini never lets anyone down, with performers, sound, attitude, and views of the Golden Gate, making this always, a "must attend" event. Long Beach can sometimes be hit or miss. This Year they have hit a home run. About 25 bands including: ...Buddy Guy, Gatemouth Brown, Sonny Rhodes, Bobby Blue Bland, John Lee Hooker, Charlie Musselwhite.... Plus a Harp Jam Featuring:

Sigh. I was going to try and keep this Central California only.
Tom Waits isn't even known as a bluesman.
Oh well. "She wasn't good, --
she had good intentions."
a Tom Waits lyric:
Well Frank settled down in the Valley
and hung his wild years
on a nail that he drove through
his wife's forehead
he sold used office furniture
out there on San Fernando Road
and assumed a $30,000 loan
at 15 1/4 % and put down payment
on a little two bedroom place
his wife was a spent piece of used jet trash
made good bloody marys
kept her mouth shut most of the time
had a little Chihuahua named Carlos
that had some kind of skin disease
and was totally blind. They had a
thoroughly modern kitchen
self-cleaning oven (the whole bit)
Frank drove a little sedan
they were so happy
One night Frank was on his way homeA Tom Waits tune sample, live in Germany: Newpaint.wav 164kb
from work, stopped at the liquor store,
picked up a couple Mickey's Big Mouths
drank 'em in the car on his way
to the Shell station, he got a gallon of
gas in a can, drove home, doused
everything in the house, torched it,
parked across the street, laughing,
watching it burn, all Halloween
orange and chimney red then
Frank put on a top forty station
got on the Hollywood Freeway
headed north.
Never could stand that dog

the nighthawk digs deep for some small change."

How cool? Too cool.
April 5, '98 I see this site as being about 1/2 done. HA!
Can you help? What we really need is more eyes and ears posting into this site. My "eyes and ears" are quite limited. Also, please tell people about this site.
Dec. '97 Anyone who wishes to post a story(s) related to da blues, e-mail it to me, and I can put it on a separate page, or whatever I can do, let me know.

Please email me when I make errors, and thanks
